Can I use this jacket as a layering piece? That's what I was told by a local salesman. Thank you.

You could layer it under a waterproof shell (you can layer pretty much anything), but you's have to size the shell up to make sure it doesn't squish the down. And of course you might have to layer a thick shirt or sweater underneath if it's really cold.
