I'm interested in buying a dual purpose jacket. I want a technical Shell to block the wind and rain plus a fleece jacket as a middle layer. The range of temperature I expect is from 20's (with the middle layer) to up 70's (with only the shell as rain protection). Therefore, I could use this combination for technical backpacking in US and Brazil, in situations ranging from rain in the summer to ugly windy conditions on the top of a mountain. All of these after carrying it with all my gear for 4 days.Would the Epic jacket be enough even though it's not zip compatible or I should go with a more expensive TNF Alliance? Would someone even suggest something else?In any case, would both be abrasion-resistant?I'll appreciate any comment.Thanks

I was looking for the same type of combo so I bought this jacket along with the Backcountry.com Shift Element softshell last month. The Shift jacket is very warm for how thin it is and it wicks water nicely in light rain. Both jackets pack small (especially the Epic, I can pack it into a Nalgene bottle if necessary). I got both in a medium and they layer nicely. The Shift jacket doesn't have a hood so it's good for light rain, then if the skies open up you can layer the Epic jacket and you don't have to deal with 2 hoods.
