The Dictionary of African Borrowings from Brazilian Portugese says that a grigri is a "person assumed to have super-human powers because he wears a grigri", which is then defined as "a document with versicles from the Koran written on it...contained in an amulet or talisman". It is also a Creole word for magic. Given that Petzl is French and gris in French means gray, it probably means the gray-gray, which doesnt make sense either. And no, I didn't make any of that up.
