I can't seem to remove the ear pads. Is there a snap or something like that to mess with before removing them? I've tried pulling up fairly hard, but don't want to break the cord or anything.

Yank the damn things out. Just have to man-handle them. I ran into the same problem and didn't want to break the brand new helmet but just went for it and they popped right out. Seems strange, I know but it worked.

Me too... same issue. I tried calling customer support, but they were of no help and the instructions are horrible!
