Yes it can be machine washed with out shrinking. Check out the nixwax wool wash: http://www.backcountry.com/store/NIK0035/Nikwax-Wool-Wash.ht
make sure you wash on cold and fluff dry. I hang my merino wool up to dry and fluff dry it so it won't be stiff at all or I will fluff dry it with no heat if I need it dried faster.
