Carbon fiber is better if you can afford it. Lighter swing weight, easier to just flick your wrist and plant the pole ahead of you. That said, in truth, I might just go with the BD Trail Trekking pole. It looks like that model is only marginally heavier: 516 grams vs 482g, and you'd save $50.
