I have fairly wide feet and usually buy 8 1/2 W. Since these don't come in a Wide version, I chose to buy size 9. They fit perfectly and are very comfortable. A regular 8 1/2 might have worked, but I chose a higher size to be on the safe side.

My own experience with my Keen sandals is that they have plenty of room in the area for your toes and such, yet still hug your ankle area. The sandals also have an adjustment cord so you can tighten or loosen the fit of the sandal. I like plenty of room for my toes and my bunion on my right foot, but I have a skinny ankle and they fit my ankle as well.
