Regarding the strap in the back that apparently hooks on with an open hook (see reviews)... could you replace this with a simple buckle or small carbiner yourself? I'm new to climbing, but that part wouldn't be weight bearing, would it? I'm thinking of this harness for my 12 year old daughter. She's 5'1" and about a size 0 waist, I think the XS would work for her. I don't want to go with a child size as I think she'd be at the upper range. I would be with her, so I could help her rehook this part if it came undone. Would be nice to find a solution for the problem though.

Those straps are not weight bearing. My concern would come from modifying the harness. If you undo any stitching on the leg loops or waist belt, you may compromise the integrity of the harness. If it's a major concern, wrap the offending straps with tape to keep them in place. For sizing, if she's at the upper end of the kid's range, the XS should be fine.
