I'm trying to choose between the Kode 30 and Kode 38. I want to use it for day trips skiing in the backcountry, but also potentially for some overnight traveling in the summer. I pack pretty light, but I have a big Nikon camera. Bigger can be better...but I don't want a big pack with a bunch of empty space every time I use it! 30 or 38?

I went searching to see if Osprey includes any sort of feature like GoLite's ComPACKtor system to shrink the overall volume of the pack and it does not. Without a tent in the summer, you could pull off an overnighter with a 30L pack. I do multi-day summer trips with a 38L pack. I think your bigger concern should be that if you get the bigger pack and don't fill it up, you won't have a stable ski carry on your backcountry day trips.
