Diana, On a day-to-day basis, while wearing, you need to avoid getting the jacket wet (some very light drizzle or light snow will be OK), sharp edges (cat and dog paws) and potentially folks that may be allergic to down. The maintenance phase (washing): You can wash the garment by hand, using a front loading washer and a detergent made for down or you can send the jacket to someone that specializes in washing high performance down jackets... you should be able to do an internet search on the various service providers.
