get the xL it will fit well with layers and just as well without.

Have a gander at the sizing chart for the athletic fit in this jacket on the Arc'teryc website - http://www.arcteryx.com/sizing-chart.aspx?EN/men-s-athletic-fit-sizing-chart You're definitely between the L and the XL... mainly in the waist vs chest portion. I'd definitely try on at least something in Arc'teryx's line before making a decision. Sizing charts are great, but sometimes are just plain off- for example Hestra's is a disaster and would put me in a Small, but I'm a Large for sure.
