Does the skewer "head" come off seperately from the "tray" on the copperhead Yakima rack? I want to also have a skewer "head" that I can use for a seperate application.

Yes, you can take the camming mechanism completely off of the Copperhead rack. I don't know what purpose you have in mind for it, but I do know that removing the Copperhead cam is a pain in the butt.The SprocketRocket has a killer camming mechanism, killer as in freaking awesome.
