Does this jacket appear a lot more glossy in real life? From the pictures it looks nice and matted, suitable for city wear too, but I saw a couple of photos in real life which make the guy wearing it look like an 80's ski instructor. Is it too spandex like?

No - it is wearable as ling as you don't mind looking like the marshmallow man! - No where near as shiny as some of the Rab jackets - I think they they have pertex shell. And this is not one of the stretch spandex like down jackets - definitely more classical in construction.
