What is that on the leather at the tip of the mitt? Some sort of loop? Or is it an opening in the shell?

these loops are also useful for hanging the gloves or mittens on your backpack for alpine touring. if your hang them upside down snow will fall directly into the interior of the mitten. these loops help by hanging the enclosed fingers upright so that no snow will not fall into the mitten

These loops are generally used in climbing purposes when you need full use of your hands. The loops hook into a carabiner on your harness or belt so you don't drop them.
