If these are "waterproof", how would they get "soaked through"?

"This miniaturized version of Hestra’s adult alpine mitten features super-light PrimaLoft insulation for flexibility and warm loft even if soaked through."

While the fabric has a waterproof coating, the seams aren't sealed, meaning that water will slowly soak the mitten through the seams if it's in wet snow long enough. So yes it can get soaked through, but it will take a good deal of rolling around in the snow for this to happen.

If you continue to read the description, it indicates that these have a waterproof coating, which means this won't be an issue. That said, unless the gloves are goretex, eventually they will likely get wet if your kid is out all day - so the added warmth protection is a good backup.
