How does the fit of the Beta FL compare to the Beta AR? I can rock a Large in the AR with room for layers, but I need an XL in some of their other slimmer jackets (e.g. Gamma MX).

I find with Arc'teryx I can often wear an M in their "athletic cut" shells whereas I normally need an L in their softshells and other jackets.

I am 184 cm / 83 kg (6'+ / 182 lbs), athletic (more shoulders than gut) and the large Beta FL fits me perfectly. The best fit I have ever had on an Arcteryx, comparable to the Alpha SL paclite. I find many of their models to bulky. I bought this yesterday, so I can't say much about the Active shell performance yet. But the fit and feel of the jacket is excellent. Lightweight both in the hand and on the body, but it gives the comfort and appearance of a much thicker and stealthier jacket. The look is just the way I like it both with a thin wool layer underneath and with a thicker fleece. If the Active shell actually breathes as good as they say, and I don't miss armpit zips, this will definitely be top-notch for allround activity all year (hiking, backcountry & big mountain skiing etc.)

The Beta FL uses the new Goretex Active layer, which is their new 3 ply Gore, similar to Paclite, but much more durable and breathable. The Beta AR uses a 3L Gore Pro which is the most durable gore out there, but you sacrifice a bit of breathability. The Beta AR weights 15.6 oz where as the Beta FL weights 11.4 oz. Both have the same "Athletic" fit, go with the large.
