How warm would the alpha sl be? I'm interested in the Hyllus fleece goody as a mid layer, but I want a shell the would b warm enough as a shell for winter but cool enough as a stand alone rain coat for the summer months.

Jason: I use that set up for skiing (at the resort and backcountry) in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. It really depends on your needs/goals. I'm aiming for the lightest set up possible (I also have an Atom LT that’s even lighter). In that regard, it really works well. But the Alpha SL is not a winter coat. It has no insulation, too few pockets and no powder skirt. In February, you’ll need two base layers on the lift or plan on being be cold. Also, the fit is pretty slim. No one will mistake you for a hip, new schooler in this jacket. All these limitations, however, make it a very versatile jacket.

Jason, This is a really light weight shell, that will block wind and water. it is made from GorePaclight which is decent on breathability, but the Beta AR you were looking at will give you much better breathability and durability; of course, it costs more too.

This is just a gore Tex shell, so it will be dry and windproof, but from an insulating standpoint, there just is not much there. With proper layering (or not in summer)though, this is the perfect choice for your described uses.
