i've always bought synthetic in the past, but am strongly considering this down jacket... now my main concern is wind retention and water-resistane. how windproof and water resistant is it? the patagonia equivalent advertises a "windproof and water-resistant polyester shell". how does this one add up in those departments? thanks!

As Kate posted, it will block most of the wind but there will be small areas that let in a little cold breeze. You are going to get this with almost all the quality down garments.

Corey, The exterior fabric of this jacket is very similar to the Patagonia version--very wind resistant and water-resistant. I would not go so far as to say that either jacket is windproof, though... Wherever there is a seam, you'll have a little leak. Highly wind-resistant, yes. Wind-proof, no. But aside from that misrepresentation, they are very comparable jackets.
