I am looking for a softshell jacket for backpacking in temperatures from 35-55 deg f. I am 6' 230lb. I was wondering if I should go for the xl.

I am 205 lbs and 5'10'' with a muscular build. I wear a Large and it fits me like a glove (the sleeves are a bit long). My brother is 6' 205 lbs with a extremely muscular build and it fits him quite well. If you have a little extra weight in the mid section I would go for the XL. If you are fairly trim around the tummy I would go for the Large.

You should measure your chest and check arcteryx sizing chart. THere is a bit of stretch with the fabric. Judging by your size an XL should fit but you should double check just to make sure.
