Hi, I am looking for a mid layer jacket to backpack in temperatures from 35-55 deg. Would this be sutable insulation over tights and a t shirt. I was also wondering what size would fit me closest. I am 6' 230lb. I think I need an xl but I am worried it will be too tight around my chest and waist.

A softshell will likely be too warm for those temperatures. I would typically only wear a windshirt at most in moderate temperatures like that.
