Is this a good beginner kayak for ocean play? I've read a lot of reviews about other kayaks being too slow or for fishing only. This one doesn't sound like it's either of those things. What type of paddle should I buy? Thanks!

Christine, this is a great beginner kayak if your intended use is ocean fun. When you look for a paddle watch the sizing charts for the correct length. Don't buy a really cheap and heavy paddle because you will be looking for a better one after a few outings.
