Is this bag comfortable for carrying weight? I'm small, but need to carry a 15" laptop and a couple books, plus lunch, etc. each day. I'm worried about the stress on shoulders/back. Does the waistbelt help with weight, or just stabilization?

Yes to a backpack. Try the Osprey Momentum or the Metron. Both designed for carrying what you want it to carry, plus, the weight is distributed to BOTH shoulders and also your hips. Great bags!

Definitely go backpack. This bag will comfortably carry a laptop and some additional stuff but anything more than one book (if you are referring to textbooks) will be too heavy for one shoulder. While the shoulder pad on the strap is super comfortable and this bag does carry weight pretty nicely, no messenger bag will carry the kind of weight you are talking about comfortably. The waist strap is just for stabilization. I was always amazed at those people in college who packed three or four textbooks in their messenger bag and hauled it around campus. It didn't look cool anymore--just uncomfortable.

In my experience, the weight of a laptop plus a couple of books starts to get pretty heavy and even painful on one shoulder. I much prefer my backpack for that sort of thing.
