I have been wearing scuba boots in my kayak, but want to move to something with more sole for portage, etc. I wear no socks with my scuba boots and notice the mention of socks with these NRS boots. Are socks needed, optional, or what? I think that would effect sizing, too.

Socks are purely for comfort and warmth. If you have had not problems with blisters or cold feet with your previous boots, dont wear them. If you are worried about getting blisters with these, just order half a size up and wear some thin hiking socks.
