So what is the width difference in the 9M and the 9W. I got a pair of 9medium and the outside of my foot opposite of arch hangs off just a bit, but the rest of the width is fine.

I can't give you specifics widths, but with my experience with Chacos, they run pretty narrow. My friend (she has slightly wide feet, but pretty average) has a pair of wides and they fit me well. I would try exchanging for a wide. Or if you are unsure and you have a shoe store around you, go and get your foot professionally fitted. They will know what size you should get and it will make buying shoes online easier.
