I have had the Amira for two years and love it for day trips, air travel, etc, but it's too small for college use. It gets crowded when I have a 3-ring binder in it combined with just one medium-sized college textbook. I know the Surge is larger but is it large enough to accommodate a mid-sized binder with books plus a water bottle in the side pouch? I love North Face and don't want to switch to something else plus I really like the fact it is made for a woman. It really makes a difference.

Krisse, Peter is correct. The Surge has a laptop dedicated pocket, where the W Recon has a laptop/hydration sleeve. And if space and day trips/hikes are of concern, I would go with the Recon. BTW...the Amira was originally sold as the "W Recon" before TNF actually began making the W's Recon.

The Surge is really made for a laptop. If you're not carrying a laptop, you're going to lose some usable space to that organization and it won't be much bigger than your Amira. If space is the biggest concern, the Women's Recon is the highest volume women's pack. The Recon will also be able to carry a laptop, but it won't be as secure.
