The description on this both here and at CamelBak's website only says this is for bad tastes and odors--I assume it is not for bacteria like a true water filter?

This carbon only filter is used to make bad tasting water taste better. The filter does not offer a ceramic component for use in the backcountry. Filtering safe to drink "Well water", with its sulfur taste and smell, would be a good example of this filters proper use.
