I am going on a 10 day backpacking trip across Northern New Mexico soon and I want a new pack before I go. I think I've wittled my choices down to either the Osprey Aether 70 or 85. When I backpack I usually go for a week or longer trips, will the 70 be big enough or should I step up to the 85. I prefer the smaller pack, but practicality comes first. Thanks for all your help!

I used this to hold all the gear i needed for a twelve day trip at philmont and i would say that the 85 is unecessary, i used the 70 and i survived. Thos is just my opinion, I also use a super compactible sleeping bag and packed my clothes super compressed so if you dont want the extra work id go with the 85.

Are you going to Philmont? Trip of a lifetime. Anyhow, I'd say it depends. If you're going straight-through with no resupply stops, you'll need the additional space of the 85 L. Otherwise, I've found that my Aether 70 L has enough capacity for about 4 days of gear and supplies, even in the winter with backcountry ski gear. A smaller pack will help keep you honest and from bringing unnecessary items.

Hey Bill, go with the 85. Osprey has a great way of compressing your load, even if you are not all the way filled up. So go with the 85, and you will be psyched!

Bill, there are many variables as pack sizes go but with your backpacking style I would personally move up to the 85. This is a fine pack but 10 days is a long time and I would rather have the extra room.

Hey Bill, Off-hand, I would say get the 85- a week+ is what it's designed for. Some might even argue that the Argon 110 would be the pack to get if that length of a trip is your norm. Sounds like this isn't your first rodeo, so it's really going to come down to what you already know about what gear you'll need, food, conditions that might require heavier clothing, etc... The Aether 70 is still a pretty cavernous pack, but it might just not quite be cavernous enough, and the 85 isn't physically too much bigger in both weight and volume. Probably best to err on the side of having more than you need than not enough.
