No. Well, maybe if you layered 3 or 4 of them it would. -40 is really really cold. You're going to need some serious layering, and even so it's hard to stay warm. If you're actually going to be in that kind of weather, something like the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero or other such hardcore jacket (http://www.backcountry.com/store/MHW0443/Mountain-Hardwear-Sub-Zero-SL-Hooded-Down-Jacket-Womens.html) is the way to go. If that was just a typo, and you meant 40 degrees (as in ABOVE zero), then yes, this is a good mid-weight jacket for that kind of temperature.
