Val, Being upwards of 5000 cubic inches, this pack is a monster and is equipped to carry everything you need for an extended expedition. As such, it's pretty darn big once you've filled it. I have a 3000 cu-in pack that baaaaarely meets carry-on requirements when it's full, and only on most airlines (United is getting more and more picky these days). If you need to use this as a carry-on, just don't pack it to capacity and then cinch every single strap on this thing down until it fits where you need it to go. Happy trails!
