These look great, but I have to ask: is there a significant difference between these and a pair of leather work gloves with a biner hole punched in them? Seems like you could save some cash, but I may be missing something...

Well they have a much thicker palm and te Leather wraps around the base of the index finger so whil rappelling/belaying the rope doesn't ware away on the finger and Tare So yes there is a difference The petzl's would last longer

Only advantage I see over what you suggested is the breathable back panel, which would make them a lot more comfortable on hot days. It would shave a few ounces, too, but climbers aren't like ultralighters when it comes to saving weight.
