I buy longs in cold bags (15deg or less) so I have room to put my boots in the bottom. Few things suck more in the morning than cold boots. Ideally, I hike to camp, switch to either a down bootie, sandal or some other comfortable footwear, let the boots dry, clean them off before I go to sleep, and tuck them in the bottom of the bag. Sometimes the heat helps dry them out, other times not, but they're always warmer than leaving them in the vestibule all night.

If you don't want your sleeping bag to be too confining & you are on the line between medium & long, go for the long & be more comfortable.
