How does this compare to a Patagonia R2 fleece in terms of warmth...

How does this compare to a Patagonia R2 fleece in terms of warmth under a shell? I'm looking for something more versatile. I know the Hyllus would be better alone because it's windproof but I don't want to overheat under a shell.

The Hyllus is probably twice as warm. You may be better served by the Atom LT jacket, which is also way more versatile than the r2, but not quite as warm as the Hyllus, and so very comfortable.
