I was fortunate enough to end up with two pair of Hestra's this Christmas. When applying the balm to the gloves, how much do I need to apply? I used part of one package on a pair and most of one other glove. I am left with about half a packet of balm. Did I use too little?

No, you didn't use too little. Just use as much as it will absorb, and save the rest for next time. You should reapply every so often to keep the leather supple and more water resistant. Hope that helps!
