Are the Diez and Thunder jacket too warm for Colorado or Utah skiing? I would be wearing baselayer, Diez jacket and Pro Shell.

great for layering in my opinion. I wear mine all the time under my shell and spend my time skiing in Utah. Not too warm at all even on warmer days it helps to regulate your temperature.

as a general rule, i wouldn't recommend a down jacket as a mid-layer to be worn under a shell. the last time I did that, i learned how truly worthless down is once it gets wet. mine got drenched from sweat. and, that was a mountain hardwear jacked with conduit fabric. this outer material of this jacket is designed to be light, not breathable. the DWR finish may keep the rain out but i doubt this or any other ultra-light down jacket will stay dry if you're working hard and it's underneath a shell.

No, they're pretty lightweight as far as down jackets go and would probably be well suited to skiing in dry, cold, western, climes - depending on the conditions of the day of course. Down is really breathable and I'll think you'll find that these jackets are comfortable in a pretty wide range of cool to cold temperatures.
