I've heard that access to the avy gear is slow and compromised because of the need to unbuckle the ski carry/compression straps. Any comments? Thanks.

If you keep the zips at the top you can pretty much just open them and pull the shovel out. If you need it fully open it takes about two seconds to undo the top buckle and open the zips fully.

It is slower, but not by much. If everything (shovel, handle, and probe) is in the front pocket, really only one of the three buckles needs to be undone in order to pull it open. I'm sure you could find something different, but I wouldn't let that single feature sway you away from this pack.
