The speakers for the Giro and Smith systems are are now (for 2010/11 anyway) practically the same size so they are totally cross compatible. IMO you should only spring for the Smith system if you want the extra functionality (microphone, skip songs, etc).

Yes, it will fit. However the giro version only controls volume and will mute the audio. The more expensive smith version will also pause, and skip to other songs.

It's possible but Smith has their own version of the same thing done with Skullcandy that is compatible with ALL adult Smith helmets.
