This or OR Trancendant? Will be used layering for skiing in the PNW and for climbing some of the volcanoes here, with a shell over top on the wet/windy days. I like both jackets, just really torn on which to get. I'm really not worried about the slight weight difference between the two, just wondering which is the better overall jacket.

This jacket is a better fill quality and is significantly thicker and warmer than the Transcendent. A problem that you might run into with this jacket is that it has a long cut - mine hangs down a couple of inches past my shell, a Marmot Exum. For that reason, I'd recommend the Transcendent for a layering piece. It is more of a sweater cut and this jacket is more of a parka. Above those two however, it sounds like you might want to look into synthetic insulated jackets - its nice to not have to worry about your layers in the wet PNW weather. Stoic's Luft is a great one, so are Patagonia's Micro and Nano puffs. For use in volcanoes, you'll want to change your layering system significantly, something more like this might do the trick http://blog.shoptrailblazer.com/wp-content/uploads/lava.jpg hope that helps
