So the ams are not insulated? Is it basically like wearing a insulated vest underneath a shell jacket? Would it be a good ski jacket on cold days?

The arms/ hood consist of a three layer soft shell with a brushed fleece backing. You will certainly pick-up more warmth around the core (as designed), but you’ll defiantly add warmth/ protection throughout the soft shell areas as well. It would not be suited for a stand-alone ski jacket on cold days. It would be perfect to wear skinning up a mountain on cold days and then throwing on an outer shell for the descent. It has large pit zips to help with temperature regulation. You could wear it as the outer layer on moderate ski days, while adjusting your inner layers, based on your body’s thermostat. The Belay Composite would also be ideal for hut to hut trips.
