I've never tried the actual jacket on. I'm 5'8"-5'-9", 155lbs, slim. Should I get a S or M?

Small for sure. I'm 5'11", 185 pounds not slim and a large was way too much for me, so a medium is my size. Therefore, a small should fit you well.

Get a small. The jacket length is pretty long so going down in size probably wouldn't hurt.
