I'm looking for a light down jacket I can just wear around town but is still durable. How tough is the outer material? Will it stain easily/rip easily?

There are pros and cons to using this jacket around town. I bought it for around-town use and it is exceptionally warm for its ultralight weight. It packs down super-small in my purse while I’m indoors—no need to carry my jacket around or find a place to hang it at the bar. The quilting pattern is flattering, and multiple women have stopped me to ask what the jacket’s name is and where I got it, because it’s so sleek and non-bulky. Those are the upsides to the jacket. The downside is that, when it comes right down to it, the material is a tad delicate. I made the idiotic mistake of carrying my skis on my shoulder while wearing this jacket, and I tore the shoulder fabric. So if you’re going to put the jacket in contact with any significant abrasion, then no, it may not stand up to it. It may be most practical to use it for MontBell’s intended purpose, which is layering beneath shell jackets during snowsports.

eh, i think you can do better. this is the "inner" parka, meaning it is more ideal for use in layering underneath a shell. the nylon outer "shell" of this jacket is less waterproof & less durable than a lot of other outer materials. this is made with ultralight materials that do have a strong weight/tear strength ratio, but the abrasion resistance isn't great. i'd say this is worth it for the folks who are looking for ultralight, but i'm thinking there are better jackets out there for around-town (ab)use.
