I'm in the market for a new ski and I'm really interested...

By Ranked #1551 - Alpine Skiing October 17, 2010

I'm in the market for a new ski and I'm really interested in this one. I ski pretty aggressively and mostly in powder the backcountry in JH (but I'm moving to Tahoe). I have been skiing a 173 length black diamond havoc for the past 3 seasons. I'm 5'7 and about 130lbs and have been skiing for about 26 years. When I looked at these in the shop the 168 looked way short but 178 sounds pretty long. The guy in the shop said they "ski short" and I should go with the the 178 but I guess I'm just a little nervous and don't want to be thrown around on too beefy of a ski. (If I have to get a different ski that is a better size for me, so be it). Advice?????

If you are comfortably skiing the 173 Havoc you will be fine on the 178 S110. With the early rise tip and tail, this ski definitely skis much shorter. I'm a 5'4" and normally ski 177-180 range, and I skied the 188 S7 (unisex version of this ski) with no trouble. It is really easy to initiate a turn with this design, and the ski almost feels pivot-y. I got Volkl Katana's (also early rise tip and tail) in 183 and love them. Don't be intimidated by length with early rise/rocker/reverse camber skis, and have fun!

Go for it the turn radius on the BD Havoc (21m @175) sucks compared to the turn radius on there skis (15 @ 178)! The early rise in tip and tail means the 178 of these will ski much shorter like a 168 ski, while providing you with loft in powder and wet heavy crud and ice conditions should be managed by the traditional camber underfoot! These should ski very poppy..with out being overly hookie!
