Taz, I picked up a pair of Arcteryx Alpha SL for fastpacking and could not be happier with the purchase. They are super lightweight, durable and pack down to nearly nothing. At $200 you are paying a premium for a Paclite pant, but no regrets here.

Yes, in terms of waterproofness they would be fine, however, they are a 2 ply pant (with a hung lining)and for an adventure race I would suggest Gore tex Paclite (no lining) as they will be lighter and more compact. Check out the Marmot Minimalist Pant that weighs 10 oz vs 18 oz for the Palisade. The Palisade pant are great for snowsports and heavy duty hiking.
