Are there attachable side pockets or pouches that will work with this pack? I am used to small , easy access pockets for quick access of small items? Any packing hints to keep food, cooking and clothing separate?

There are side pockets available but I'd move up to a larger volume pack instead. Attachable pockets will give you about 700 more cubic inches which will move you into the next size category.
