I've got the large Z35-R. I've had no trouble using it for a carry-on in the US, and SA. But I did have an airline employee tell me I'd have to check it in Peru, because supposedly the flight was full. However, when I got on the plane it was half empty. There was lots of room in the overheads. I think it just depends who you get and how full it it is. Terrific pack.

You are fine with the 31L and the 35L. The 39L becomes more sketch, particularly if you really pack the back external pockets. Happy flying.
