Since this is just a shell, what layering do you recomend underneath? How warm will this shell be with layering compared to other shells?

That's a really subjective question that's going to depend on the conditions. I suppose a general answer would be a base layer such as a Capilene 3 and a softshell or fleece as a mid layer. Take your pick there, but you'll want something that breaths, as well as insulates. It's really going to come down to experimentation- if you're too cold or hot one day, adjust accordingly the next, until you get it comfortably dialed in. The other reviewers are calling this a thick and burly jacket. Add to that the wrist gaiters and powder skirt, and you should have a piece that should stack up pretty well to most other hard shells designed for the same use. Hope that at least got you going in the right direction.
