I take it everyday riding my bike to work (~ 15 min each way), and even though it is not truly waterproof I have never seen the inside damp even when it is pouring outside, and I feel like it could handle the rain longer. On the other side I wouldn't trust the front pocket, but again, I haven't seen it wet so far.

I would describe it as very water resistant, but I would not rely on it for an extended period in a downpour. The exterior pocket on the flap has a taped zipper as well. If you want to carry it while walking to the car/bus you should be just fine. The fabric is DWR coated and very thick, so it'd take a while for it to get soaked though.

It does have a DWR finish but I haven't taken mine out in the rain yet so I can't say how well it works.
