What is the best way to mark the middle of a climbing rope that isn't bi-colored or already marked at the factory?

http://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/en-us/journal/climb/qclab/qc-lab-can-i-use-a-sharpie-to-mark-the-middle-of-my-rope A helpful post from a trusted source. The data (although limited) would seem to indicate that a Sharpie is a perfectly safe method of marking your rope. Hope that was helpful Simon

Sharpie makes a laundry marker that is water based. I have marked the center of my rope about 3 months ago, and after extensive use, I have not noticed any degradation of the outer sheath

I have heard reports that even supposedly 'rope-safe' markers can actually damage the nylon. A better method is to take a very thin red thread and weave it through the sheath of the rope with a very fine needle; wrap it around a few times, weave again, tie off. This may be less damaging to the rope.

Local climbing shop should have special markers for that. Don't use a regular sharpie, the ink weakens the rope fibers over time. No bueno.
