Hi, I'm 5'9", 183lbs, athletic-muscular build. Undecided whether to go L or XL with this jacket. I would like to be able to wear it on its own or on top of my Large MontBell Ultralight Tec Down Jacket. Any suggestions?

go with a Large. you won't regret it. XL would be like a parachute

You actually might want to consider a medium if your looking for an athletic fit. I have two norrona jackets. One large and one medium. I am 6' 190lbs with an athletic build. The medium fits like an arcteryx jacket with room for layers and the large has a slightly baggy fit but long arms (almost too long for me). Whatever you do don't get the xl it will be way too big for you.

I would go with a Large. If it does not fit to your specifications, you can always exchange it for an XL.
