How do you know what size to get...looking for
one for my sleeping bag.

That will depend on your sleeping bag. If you have a synthetic mummy bag rated somewhere around 20 degrees a medium (16L) should be perfect. If you have a down bag with a similar rating I am fairly confident that you can go with a small (11L). This is a picture of a womens long 20 degree 600 fill sleeping bag in a medium. You can see that I am completely compressed as far as this compression sack can go (granite gear medium 16L), meaning I probably could have fit the same bag into a small no problem.
