I've got about 5 weeks and maybe 40 miles on these boots. They are finally broken in, but I'm wondering if anyone else who owns these knows when the chemical smell will disappear. Since brand new they have had a distinctive odor and still do. It's not wildly unpleasant, nor does it particularly bother me when wearing them. It's just that if you leave them sit somewhere say overnight and walk into that room the next day, yeah. It smells like the boots. Again, its not foot odor. It's the "new" boot smell. I presume it has something to do with the synthetic materials used and I am open to input, thanks!

Oh, and Bal, I'm not going to argue over the quality of the boot at this point, but I would like to point out that the sole is made by Vibram, not Merrel. It's getting difficult to find a boot manufacturer who isn't using Vibram soles.

I haven't put much more mileage on them as this summer I basically just wore my Merrell Intercepts, but now 5 months later they are distinctively less odoriferous. Pulling them out for a trip to the Porcupine mountains this weekend :)

Give it time. Soon enough yours will smell like mine, which is a combo of tree and funk.

These boots are crap. I took mine on 1 hiking trip to Everest base camp and had to send them back in for a replacement. I lost quite a few treads completely on the bottom, half were tearing off, and others were completely worn down. Extremely disappointed with Merrell. I will never buy another product from them!

0.875 miles a day. give it enough time and the new boot smell will be evicted and the landlord will place his serious footfunk permanently.
